Some people build structures out of wood and vinyl because they operate under the assumption that these substances are more durable than brick. Brick will experience crumbling of course, but only if left to face the weather by itself. When properly maintained, however, brick will last for over 100 years. Brick structures are lovely; they remind us of a time before metal and plastics ruled construction. Brick is a truly historic construction material. There are ways to keep bricks in good condition.
The best maintenance you can perform is prevention. This means that you should inspect your bricks every so often, and whatever structure you own made from them should be checked for signs of water damage on interior surfaces. On the outside, plants need to be cut close to the brick surface being careful not to pull them. Many plants will attach tendrils to the pores in the brick and pulling them out may pull apart the brick. Moisture penetration is also indicated by white deposits known as efflorescence.
If efflorescence has in fact settled onto the brick, it may be cleared off with a brush of stiff bristles and water. Hardened deposits of efflorescence may not come off so easily and a chemical cleaner is needed. Some masons recommend using sealants to keep bricks in good shape. One such sealant is film, and this thin protective layer must be placed over dry brick only. If the brick is wet, the moisture will be trapped by the film, completely defeating the purpose of it. Penetrants are other types of sealants that work that bleed into the brick, waterproofing it.
Even the best maintenance will sometimes yield to brick damage. If one suffers some blemishes, it may be repaired by chipping away the mortar surrounding it and removing it from its slot. The mortar left behind should be cleaned and be covered with a fresh layer. If you have some experience in fixing bricks, a render that acts as cement may be used to repair the damage. If the damage is extensive, it is probably best to simply replace it. If several bricks must be repaired or replaced, you may wish to seek professional assistance.
Brick is sturdy and attractive. Keeping it in good condition is possible with proper maintenance and regular inspection. Doing so will keep bricks in proper form and allow them to provide structure for years to come.
