When I started my freshman year in South Dakota, I was very concerned with college campus safety. My whole family lived in a different state and this would be my first time living away from home.
I attended a seminar that was all about advocating the use of personal security tools. The lecturer went on saying that there were local felons who would not think twice about preying on students from other states.
I immediately called my dad up and told him what I had heard. He agreed wholeheartedly and said that he would buy me a stun gun or pepper spray as soon as he can. He left the decision of which of the two I wanted.

If I was just coming from a party or a late night study session, I wanted to have something on my person that could defend against those with untoward intentions. After a while, I started sharing this find with my friends, emphasizing the need for college campus safety.
Some weeks into the second semester, I saw someone about to get mugged. I saw a security guard a ways off but wasn’t sure I could get to him in time to prevent the robbery about to take place.
