If you are like most people today, you feel really bad for those countries that do not have clean water to drink. You should also be aware that even the water supply in countries like America is becoming increasingly contaminated and harder to clean well enough to be completely safe. Water treatment facilities do the best job they can to guarantee safe drinking water, but that is becoming increasingly harder to do. Well water users have always had to make sure their own water was clean because it is not necessarily safe either.
The first and perhaps least dangerous of contaminates in a lot of water are things like calcium and magnesium. These minerals make water hard and are not deadly, but can wreak havoc with your plumbing and water using appliances. It can cause hard water stains to your tubs, sinks, and toilets. It can also make your skin dry and itchy as well as dull your hair and make it lifeless. Usually well water users suffer these problems the most. Hard water might not be hazardous, but it can cause home repair costs and be very annoying to deal with. Getting a water softener or additive can help with that, but it won’t solve more serious problems.
The more serious problems that can contaminate water are pathogenic bacteria. These are the serious bacteria like E-coli and Coliforms, but not limited to just those. The presence of Coliforms and E-coli could indicate fecal contamination. These bacteria can commonly be found in well water and sometimes even city water supplies can be contaminated in some way. These bacteria can make people seriously ill and can be deadly. The majority of these contaminates are eliminated when water is disinfected, but some might survive after all. Some of these bacteria can actually attach to the inside of your plumbing and show up at any time.
Although the long term affects of this next issue is not fully known, it can not be good. When people take drugs, and we know there are a lot of various drugs consumed in this country alone every single day, those drugs are discarded in human waste and flushed down the toilet. Even water treatment facilities admit that not all of the drugs are removed during water treatment, but the amounts are supposed to be very small at this point. The point is however, how long will it take before there are so many drugs like antibiotics, sex hormones, mood stabilizers and even more simple things like Ibuprofin and aspirin, that become so present that they do cause problems?
