If you are going to landscape your backyard, then you should think about the type of irrigation system you will use to water your plants, shrubs and trees. Will you use hoses above ground or will you have your irrigation system below ground. In making your decision, also consider the water bill and learn about when you can or should water.
There is some controversy if mowing your lawn when the grass is higher will save any money on the water bill or save any water. However, longer grass will have roots that are stronger and is more resistant to drought. The grass should be mowed no shorter or longer than three inches. The soil becomes compacted after a while and aerating your lawn regularly will help the grass as it will give the grass roots air. How often you should aerate depends on the kind of grass you have planted. There is some question as to whether it is good to leave grass clippings on the lawn. If your grass had dry spots, it is a good indication that your lawn needs to be aerated.
If you use a lot of fertilizer, it may help the grass to grow but there is more water usage with taller grass. Only apply as much fertilizer as is needed and perhaps small doses at more frequent intervals would be better. Do not use toxic fertilizer injector methods as the chemicals that are used may be toxic as the wind blows it into neighbor’s yards where children and pets may be playing. You can use about two or three inches of mulch such as wood chips, almond, hulls, decorative rock and so forth. Doing this will reduce the amount of water that will be used and also reduce the amount of weeds on your lawn.
Making your lawn smaller and reshaping it can save water. The lawn uses more water than plants and shrubs. Be sure your irrigation system is not near the house so that it will not cause property damage to the house. If you plant small plants along a fence with a drip type of irrigation system between the plants, it will save water as well. Another way to save water with plants is to plant those plants that use a lot of water in a shady spot where the wind will not dry them out too quickly.
There is a large emphasis on water conservation and coupons are being distributed with rebates and discounts to people that are buying irrigation equipment. Some will receive equipment free of charge. You should inquire about these discounts from your water provider before you purchase irrigation equipment and have it installed. Don’t forget to ask about any freebies.
