If you’ve ever wanted to learn a little more about the world of door handles, you’ve come to the right place! Door handles, for those unfamiliar with the concept, are used to open and close doors.
The use of door knobs apparently reaches way back to the 18th century, although earlier versions were probably in use before then, while the following century saw the introduction of the door handle. Door knobs have bolts running through them that are positioned slightly above a cylinder, which is connected to a spindle. When the knob is turned, even a little, the cylinder is pulled towards the direction of the turn.
When it comes to where your typical door handle should be installed on the door as a whole, there is no widely accepted rule. The door handle can be placed just a few centimetres away from the door’s edge as acceptably as it may be placed further towards the middle of the door. At the end of the day, it all depends upon personal taste and practical usage.
If you’ve never stopped to think about door knobs and handles closely, you could easily be forgiven for thinking that door handles and cultural differences are two concepts that have nothing in common. You’d be wrong to make this assumption, however, as door handles are much more commonly found in the UK and Europe than in other continents. Door knobs, however, would seem to be the preference over in America, especially away from the major cities. In locations such as New York and Los Angeles, the door handle is becoming ever more popular, particularly in hotels and other public buildings, since small children and the elderly can find certain models of door knob difficult to operate.
It is also possible to buy dummy door handles. These are used for ball catch doors for which a handle is not required but is desired for the aesthetic quality it can bring to the door and the room as a whole. These dummy door handles come in all shapes and sizes and can be constructed from a range of materials to suit the existing material of your door. It’s well worth shopping around before investing in a door handle, though, because they can be fairly expensive. There are several reputable online retailers that offer decent quality handles and knobs at fair prices, so do your research thoroughly before committing yourself to anything.
