I never knew what a hog ring was until researching this article and I’ll bet most people have no idea either. Interestingly, they’re used in the manufacture of every day items with which we’re in frequent contact. Now you’ll know.

The installation of a chain link fence, for example, employs the use of many hog rings. They’re what hold the ‘chain’, or fencing material to the vertical supports. They’re also used in large number in the automotive manufacturing process. For one thing, they’re used in securing a car’s upholstery. You don’t normally see them because they’re hidden beneath the seats.

As with most things, having the proper tool makes any job go smoother and easier. Sometimes it’s possible to make do with something else for a particular task but having the proper ’specialty’ tool is always the best bet for ease of operation. Hog ring pliers are a good example. Without the proper tool, fastening hog rings becomes a much more difficult task.

For those whose jobs involve the frequent use of this type of fastening ring, it might be worth considering the purchase of a pneumatic version. These are not only quicker in operation than the standard, manual way of doing things… they also make the job easier. Rings used for different applications include a wide range of sizes and composition. Common materials used to make the rings include galvanized and stainless steel and also aluminum.

Hog rings are also typically used in the manufacture of crab pots and lobster traps. It’s also common to find them on sailboats, where they’re used to fasten the rigging. Again, the proper tool makes the job quicker and simpler. When picking a tool, you’ll be faced with the choice of buying a lower quality, foreign-made item or a more expensive but distinctly higher quality model made in America. Spend the extra money in this instance. The benefits will far outweigh the extra expense.

Top quality will always be worth paying more for. Paying double for something built to last a lifetime makes more sense than replacing a substandard imitation which will probably break or wear out and will NEVER work as well.

Electrician tools are a perfect example of the value in quality. A piece of junk equipment that ends up getting someone electrocuted wasn’t such a bargain after all. Better to be safe than sorry, right?

Bob Proctor has been writing articles since 2006 and is an expert on crimping tools, however he also likes to write about hog ring pliers
