Dogs are truly man’s best friends as these animals have provided man with unending unconditional love, protection, companionship and compassion. Most dog owners would be concerned if the pet shows the symptoms of intestinal parasite infestation. Dog owners must have an idea how to eliminate these worms from the dog’s body as the risk that the infestation will be transferred to other pet and to humans is very high. A dewormer for one type of worm will not effectively eliminate another type thus for the treatment to be effective, proper diagnosis will be necessary.
One out of three dogs can be infested with different species of intestinal worms. Among these parasites, heartworm infestation is considered to be the most dangerous as it can result to the death of the dog if treatment is not promptly administered. Dogs generally have worms in their lifetime. Puppies are even born with worms contracted from the mother dog.
The process of ridding a dog of the parasites inside its body is not as easy as getting the dog to take the worming pill. Pet owner that choose to deal with the infestation with the least effort would simply get OTC medications but as most wormers would not be effective for all types of worms, the infestation will not be eradicated. A dog that have had deworming treatment can be reinfested again thus the treatment must be an ongoing process.
All puppies have intestinal worms thus they would need an assertive deworming treatment. Treatment that must be started at 2 weeks of age must be administered again when the puppy is 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks of age. This 2 week interval that follows the life cycle of the parasite is given so that the first treatment will kill the adult worms and the succeeding treatments will ensure that the worms that will be hatched will be eliminated as well. Nursing dams must be treated alongside the puppies. This course of treatment must be followed by monthly deworming until the puppy is 6 months old. When infested dogs defecate, the excrement contains larva of the parasite thus the infestations would spread easily. Dogs have the inclination to eat poop and to play and dig in areas where they usually defecate thus they can easily get another parasite infestation. To prevent reinfection, dog owners must ensure that the pet has an ongoing deworming treatment by giving the dog a wide spectrum anthelmintics every three months
