It is vitally important that we get some good quality sleep at night. That is the time when our bodies can repair any damage we have done to them and when our minds can sort through the memories of the day. Yet while it is important then almost all of us will have struggled at one point or another to get to sleep, and for some people that struggle lasts a lot longer. Here are some methods to help you drift off as soon as your head hits the pillow:
Make sure you have a routine: You might think having a routine would make very little difference, but actually it allows your brain to know in advance what it needs to be doing. By giving your brain a target of when your mind and body need to wind down ready for bed, and when your body needs to wake up fresh and alert each day (by rigidly following a set bedtime and time to wake up) then you help it to do just that. It can also save you a lot of stress if you have a set time that you wake up and go to bed because it allows you to plan your day a lot more efficiently so you don’t end up trying to cram too much in and stressing yourself out.
Try to cut out anything which can distract you: If you are having trouble trying to get to sleep then even the smallest noise will irritate you, so try to cut out as many as possible. If you can do something to quiet even a few of those noises then that means there are a lot fewer annoying noises to contend with as you try to get to sleep.
It is impossible to cure all the noises that annoy you during the night though, as inevitably there will be some outside your house which you can’t deal with, like neighbors who come home late at night or insect sounds etc, but you can buy gadgets to help. Don’t get too excited though, these aren’t fancy gadgets which can literally stop you from hearing that kind of noise, they just try to drown it out with their own noise instead. The machines are classed as noise generators and there are lots on the market but the Marpac Sleepmate 980a is a popular version right now. They all work in a pretty similar way, they produce a constant but relatively quiet noise that you can concentrate on so you don’t notice some of the other noises.
Be honest with your partner: Think long and hard about what is actually keeping you up, is your partner part of the problem? A lot of the time they are if they tend to hog the duvet or they snore all the time, and it is a hard subject to bring up without hurting their feelings. At some point you are going to have to talk to them though if they are keeping you up. Start off by finding some solutions online to the problem and then you can ask them to try them out, if those solutions don’t work or they refuse to try them then try sleeping in different beds.
I know these things seem extreme, but if you really are having trouble sleeping then they can help you out and isn’t it worth a bit of effort to finally be able to get a good nights sleep?
