Moving to a new house, whether across the street or across the country, can be a very exciting time in your life, but packing up your belongings in preparation for that move can be a real chore. Anyone who has ever packed up and moved would almost certainly agree that packing is the most time-consuming aspect of the process, and if not handled correctly, a poor packing job could end up costing you plenty of unnecessary time, energy and money. Here we have compiled a few packing tips to help you avoid some of these mistakes and make moving into your new place a little more hassle-free.
Perhaps one of the most frustrating parts of a large move is arriving at your new place only to discover that you can’t find a change of clothes in the mess of cardboard boxes. To avoid this you must plan ahead. Try packing an overnight bag with the things you’ll need the next few days and keep it separate from the “moving mess”.
Packing can be a great way to jump-start your spring cleaning. Take advantage of this process to either discard items you no longer need or designate them for charity. The more you throw out or give away, the less you have to pack. As you begin to pack away your belongings, start by disassembling any large items-tables, etc. This will give you a lot more room to spread out. During disassembly, securely tape any small parts such as nuts, bolts and screws to the underside of the item. This will make things much easier when it comes time to put it together again. Clearly mark each box with a “FAT” black marker. Mark the box on opposite sides so you can see it from any angle.
When packing expensive electronic items, you may first want to take a picture of how each of your electronic pieces is connected. Later you can refer to this photo when it’s time to reattach the cords. Make sure to label each and every cord as you remove it, using some type of color scheme to match them to the proper item, and secure each cord using twist-ties or heavy rubber bands. Also, keep in mind that electronics can be very fragile, so make sure you surround each of one of your electronic items with at least 2-inches of Styrofoam packing peanuts.
By following these tips-clearly marking your boxes, discarding or donating old items and protecting fragile electronic equipment-you can ensure that the process of unpacking goes just as smoothly as the packing did.
