What is a false ceiling? A minor ceiling, hung under the main ceiling is known as false ceiling. Drop ceiling and suspended ceiling are the other two names of the false ceiling. It has now become an integral part of modern design and architecture. The area between the main ceiling and false ceiling is known as plenum space. This space is used to veil wiring, ductwork and piping.

Gypsum board: lightweight, flexible and fire resistant, gypsum is most commonly used for false ceiling. They are tough, versatile and economical and are fast replacing other ceiling materials.
Metal ceiling panels: they are ideal for concealing ducts and wiring since they can be easily installed and maintained. They reduce overall cost since they are easy to install and access. They have a monolithic look, which gives the space a very modern look and blend with glass.
Other material used to make false ceiling is fiber or mineral reinforced tile or fiberboard. They are highly insulated against fire and sound. Material’s hardness and toughness is increased with the help of fiber. To increase the life of the products, water repellents and preservatives can be added.
POP (Plaster Of Paris) is also frequently used in the construction of a suspended ceiling. First it is applied to a wood base or fiberboard, and then it is perched from the false ceiling. It is popular as it is lightweight and results in a smooth and uniform finish.
Plywood: plywood ceilings are widely used for their visual appeal. These ceilings are created with stripes of ply glued or nailed together. They are generally used at places with cold climates. They can be further treated to increase their lifespan.
Initially the false ceiling was developed for audio problems. It provides sound deadening qualities. The design and technology of the false ceiling in case of sound absorption has significantly increased in the current years.
