It’s summertime in Utah again. Summer is a time for activities like hiking, swimming or spending afternoons out in the park for outdoor time in the sun. With the beginning of Utah’s summer weather, pet owners need to get their pets ready for the hot weather months ahead.

Most pet owners may feel like hot weather pet care is an issue of common sense. But it is easy to forget that our pets have different needs in the heat of summer than we do. Here is a list of things you can do to help support a healthy and happy summer for your pet:

- Animals DO NOT sweat the same way that humans do to regulate their temperature. Do not leave your pet in a locked car for any period of time. In minutes your car reaches dangerous temperatures.

- Dogs may experience heat stroke in the summer months. Keep an eye out for unexplained hyper excitement, excessive panting and heavy salivation. If you think your dog might have the symptoms of heat stroke, contact your vet as soon as possible.

- Provide easy access to shade and water for your pet.

- With mosquitoes in the air, make sure to visit your veterinarian for flea and heartworm medications. Preventative medications can prevent serious health conditions caused by flea or heartworms.

- Matted fur can cause skin infections. Make it a point to keep your pet well groomed.

- Your pet might develop an allergic reaction during the summer months. If your pet has round, red spots that look like they have puss, you’ll want to visit your vet.

The heat and warmth of summer can be enjoyable for your pet if you have made sure to be aware of their special needs. With shade, water and tender loving care, your pet can enjoy the summer months with you. If you have any specific questions about summer care for your pet, please feel free to consult your local veterinarian or email an expert at the Humane Society of Utah. Have a great summer!
