Most every dog owner wants to raise their puppies to become happy, obedient, and loyal dog. And fortunately, that is not something that is too hard to accomplish. So let’s start to talk about some basics of dog training.
To start off with, it is important not to underestimate the power of treats. You should have some kind of treat with you at all times, when you are around your dog. That way, when he does well, you can reward him appropriately.
Treats can be special pieces of dog food, dog biscuits, or snacks. So once you are good to go with your treats, you can start training your dog step by step.
Step #1: Choose the command you want to teach wisely. Begin with a simple command, ideally with the sit command. This command is easy to teach, and you will be successful quite fast.
Also, it will build the foundation for many another command, such as the lie down command or the stay command.
Step two: Simply hold a treat in your hand. Then let your dog smell it, but don’t actually allow him to eat it. Instead, move it slowly over his head. As his eyes will follow the treat, he will sit down eventually.
When he is in that position, give him the treat and praise him. Repeat this exercise several times. And then take a break. Do not make the practice sessions too long. Short periods are much easier, and you are likely to be more successful.
Step number three: You still need to actually say the command “sit”. To introduce your dog to it, repeat step two, and simply give the verbal command “sit”, before you guide your dog with the treat.
Step #4: Once step three has been accomplished, do not use the treat to guide or dog anymore. Just use the verbal command. And, as always, praise your dog and give him a treat when he obeys you.
