Having a deck can be one’s dream, however furnishing it can prove to be a daunting challenge. There are so many shade structures that you can choose from, such that mentioning all such structures in one article is almost impossible. So we are going to look at some of the common shade structures that you can opt for.

Before we can start talking about furnishing the deck we should start by explaining what a deck is and why people like it. A deck is a raised platform connected to the house facing a garden or any other outdoor features around the house. The deck is a favorite among many for it is the ideal private area that one can get out of the house, bask in the sun and have a feel of the fresh air. Decks also offer some shade which serves as protection from high sunlight exposures as well as rain whilst still allowing you to enjoy the cool breeze. These shade structures are very important so we are going to talk about them in this particular article.

There are various types of shade structures designed to offer security while at the same time give your deck added aesthetic value. Shade structures can be; tents, gazebos, arbors umbrellas, trees, covered picnic shelters and so on. However the most common are:

1. Arbors

Arbors are 3 dimensional structures designed to look like a room made from posts that hold an overhead slopping roof made of rafters. The sides of the arbor may be covered by creepers and shrubs which will act as side walls to give the outdoor room some form of privacy.

2. Pergola

A pergola is a very similar to an arbor the only difference is that a pergola is attached to the house and the house wall supports it. Since the pergola is partly supported by the house wall, it does not have many supporting posts as does an arbor. A pergola will protect your house from excess sunlight as it shades the wall it rests on.

In order to achieve the best of the advantages of the structure you need to make some engineering adjustments. The horizontal joists must be made with a particular spacing and also falling within a given direction, just to make sure that the shade is able to prevent the sun’s rays from making their way into the house.

3. Trellis

A trellis is a simple structure that you can even construct on your own. It is simply a few wooden posts that are designed in such a manner that vines and creepers can grow over it, to create a natural shade. This type of shade can be designed to be vertical, similar to a curtain, or it could be horizontal like the ceiling portion of the arbor.

4. Umbrellas

Shade umbrellas are also a good option, only that these are more temporary in nature. Besides, umbrellas are unable of providing the more dramatic design effects afforded by the trellises, arbors and pergolas.
