Hookah pipes are glass based multi-stemmed devices used for smoking tobacco. The glass base contains water which the smoke passes through to be cooled before it is inhaled. They are most often referred to as water pipes. Having originated in India more than 3500 years ago, its tradition has spanned countless countries and cultures around the world resulting in almost as many names. Shisha, Nargile and Arghileh are just a few.
The first water pipe was made from a coconut shell and was used to smoke opium and hashish.Sometime during the 15th century, glass manufacturers began exporting glass to India and the door was opened to a new look for the hookah. It was now made of wood with a glass base.
The hookah gained recognition wherever it went and quickly made its way through Arab and Persian countries to land in Turkey some 500 years ago. There it became a one of their oldest and deep-rooted traditions. Its pleasures were enjoyed by both men and women from all walks of life. Mass popularity among more socially elevated people called for a design change, this resulting in the more modern designs today.
Hookah coffee shops were all the rage. A bar waiter at this type of shop was treated like a modern day chef because of the great skill used to prepare for smoking. Getting the packing and moisture right was a skill and it was considered rude to touch the coals. Today, these types of coffee shops are social places where people go to discuss politics and social events. In countries like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, hookah bars are a men only scene. Some Muslim countries believe that hookah is completely forbidden.
Popularity became so intense that etiquette rules were developed for usage. Here are just a few. It was considered rude to light a cigarette from the hookah coals and could possibly taint the flavor. Whenever passing the hose, fold the handle so the tip is pointing at you. Failing to do so, will be seen as a sign of disrespect and hostility. Do not bogart (keep to yourself) the hose when talking; pass it to another.
Water pipes of the past were only manufactured by hand. Each pipe is constructed of four basic pieces. Each piece is made by a craftsmen skilled in making only that piece. Those four pieces are the mouthpiece, the top of the Nargile, the tube, and the body that gets filled with water. Today, this can all be done in the blink of an eye on an assembly line.
Although handmade traditional Nargiles can still be found, modern manufacturing now mass produces them in assembly line fashion. If you have never purchased one, but are considering it, keep a few things in mind before committing. Know the origin, the materials from which it was made, the height, hose options and price. Comparing modern to traditional styles may also help to reach a decision.
Traditional handmade hookah pipes stand out by way of style, construction and performance. It will generally be crafted of heavier metals or metal combinations. Brass is typically used at the hose port and check valve to ensure long smooth operation.
Most modern hookahs sold by US companies are cranked out assembly line fashion in China. Lightweight cheaper materials are used in construction. More often than not the components are threaded and screw together. While that may seem like a negative to some, it lends itself to being a huge positive since the parts can also be unscrewed and placed in a carry bag to take with you.
