The best holiday each year is surely Halloween. Sure, Christmas is beloved, but All Hallow’s Day is a wacky wild event and the best parties can happen in late October. Be sure that you enjoy Halloween to the fullest with these delightful ideas for spookerific entertaining.
One: Add an extra something to a costume shindig: Anybody can throw a costume party at this time of year, and lots of people do. Want something extra special and appealing? Come up with a terrific theme for your dress-up party. “Come as your childhood hero” is a great one. Or “favorite movie character” is another winner.
What makes these ideas successful? Number 1, they let your guests be imaginative. The ideas let people kind of open up and show something of themselves. It’s fun and even intimate. It’s one thing to put on a princess costume or a Frankenstein mask. It’s a lot more fun to arrive to a party dressed as someone that is a favorite of mine all year round. Number 2, the ideas help your invitees participate. Many of us struggle to think of costumes and your theme helps your friends think! If a person isn’t good at coming up with cool ideas, you’ve started them off.
Number two: Prepare games that are similar to the theme of the party. Remember, every Tom, Dick and Harry can have a Best Costume vote and award prizes for the winners. You can do better! For your movie character theme, why don’t you set aside a part of the party for people to act and speak as their characters? You can request that your guests bring a fun fact about their movie, and/or some quotations from the film. Now, instead of a boring old Best Costume prize, you can play film quotes or trivia games and award gifts to the winners. You can also present Best Actor Awards to whoever stayed in character the best.
Number three: Make your house a multiplex. It’s so simple to do these days if you have a laptop. Some families have more than one, but if you don’t, you probably have a guest or two who will be happy to bring one along. With a TV set, and the built-in DVD abilities of your computers, you can have several screens playing a variety of films related to Halloween or to your theme. Traditional Halloween material is generally gruesome or frightening from the quiet thriller stylings of Peeping Tom or Psycho to the full-bore slasher genre exemplified by the Elm Street series. If your theme is “come as your childhood hero” you can play a very different sort of film.
Using these easy techniques to make your theme more exciting is a great way of enjoying the best that the Halloween season has to offer.
