Just the thought of packing up and moving your entire household can be stressful, let alone actually going through the process. If you are getting ready to head into a new place, try using these tips to make life a little less stressful.
When you have a firm move date, begin calling moving companies and book the job. Online reviews can be helpful, but it is better to ask friends and realtors for recommendations. Get several quotes, and make sure they actually send someone out to your home to assess the move. Also, confirm that they have a real factual address and a fleet of trucks. You don’t want someone who works out of his back bedroom and rents a truck to come and move your items. Your mover should be licensed and bonded and should provide you with a detailed estimate. They also should not take any money up front; this is a tip that confirms they are not a legitimate company.
Once you have chosen movers or while you are in that process, sit down and make a detailed list of all the things that must be accomplished and when. For example, you need to change your addresses, shut off utilities, and retrieve copies of medical records and so on. Keep the list handy at all times. In fact, create a large moving folder that contains everything you need and keep it close at hand.
Packing is a big part of the moving process, so start early. Boxes are your first necessity! In addition to purchasing boxes, there are several ways to get them for free. You can join Freecycle.org, and you will often see people giving away their used moving boxes. Grocery and warehouse stores typically have tons of boxes that they give a way for free, as well. Start collecting newspaper to use for packing valuables, ask friends or neighbors for their old papers.
Clearly label each box with the contents and the room where it should be placed in the new house. Color coding is a good idea, you can color code family room boxes blue, master bedroom boxes red and so on. Place a sign over the door of the rooms at your new house in the color for that room. On moving day, the movers just have to match the color on the box to the room color.
Be sure to pack some suitcases with essential clothing and toiletries for each family member. You can live out of these for several days while you unpack. If you are moving a fairly short distance, pack a box with handy kitchen items, such as a coffeepot and utensils and a small pot. Consider packing a cooler with drinks and snacks to get you through moving day. If the move is farther away, designate an open-first box for the kitchen. This box will have your coffee-pot, some canned coffee, dry creamer, canned soup, granola bars, a small pan, utensils and other items that can help you fix a quick cup of coffee or some fast food.
So, keeping this information in mind, being organized is truly the best way to go. Nothing makes moving less work, but at least you will keep it all under control. Be sure to charge your cell phone and keep the charger in your hanedbag or car.
