Memory foam was originally developed by NASA to lessen the pressure of astronauts being pinned back into their seats during lift-offs. Their research yielded a new substance they named visco elastic memory foam, now commonly referred to as simply memory foam. The advantages of the foam were that it could adjust quickly to body movements and maintain an equal weight distribution across the foam surface. In ‘92, the very first consumer memory foam beds were brought to market by Tempurpedic.
It is not quite accurate to say that a visco elastic foam mattress is soft. Stress on your pressure points is reduced by distributing the weight evenly on the sleeping area and forming itself to the contours of your body. The problem with most inner spring mattresses is that they tend to create uncomfortable pressure points, which a memory foam mattress can alleviate.
Visco foam beds are able to breathe because of their open cell structure. Given that the foam doesn’t retain moisture or body heat, the mattress stays comfortable at all times.
Due to the highly resistant characteristics of memory foam, mildew and mold aren’t a problem. This can actually assist those with allergies by removing a major source of allergens from their bedrooms and providing a better sleep environment.
An additional nice advantage of memory foam beds is that motion transfer is limited so that your movement will not disturb your partner. It is of course much easier to get good sleep if you are not bothered by unwanted disturbances.
It’s important to note that good quality memory foam beds won’t require a box-spring below them for additional support. While you can certainly use a platform base to raise the height of the bed, it has worth noting that the bed should feel just as good resting on a flat, concrete surface.
Be on the lookout for inferior quality imitations that do not carry a good warranty. Be cautious when buying foam mattresses manufactured outside the US because quality can vary.
Many people opt for a memory foam mattress pad from Tempurpedic because it is well known brand, but other brands like Foamex and Dynasty Mattress make quality products, too. Click over to memoryfoambedsdepot.com before you make your final decision.
