There are people who can fall asleep anywhere and others who simply need the comfort of a waterbed to get their full eight hours. However, this type of bed requires more effort than simply filling it up and jumping into bed. It must be treated regularly with waterbed conditioner in order to stay in great shape and provide the best possible sleep.
Waterbed conditioners prevent mold and algae from building up inside the beds mattress. If they are allowed to develop, the user will be kept awake from noisy bubbles and the smell of stagnant water that these molds will cause. In addition, molds and algae can settle on the inner wall of the bed and weaken it over time. Conditioner should be added to the bed water every six months, but it should never go twelve months without being conditioned.
The way that most people condition their mattresses is by using liquid conditioner. These solutions are not only great for stopping the buildup of undesirable elements in the water, but they will also keep the interior of the mattress lubricated so that there will be fewer noisy bubbles. These products are simple to use and can be found at very low cost. For just five dollars, someone can purchase a sixteen ounce container of treatment.
Another way to treat the mattress is with chemical tablets. These work best with waterbed mattresses that are constructed from individual tubes. They are extremely simple to use and, like the liquid, very inexpensive at about twenty dollars for forty tablets. They are a great alternative because they are not as messy as using liquids.
A further option for treatment is to use a homemade remedy. Simply mix sodium thiosylphate and distilled water in an airtight container and shake vigorously. Some people think that using bleach will help kill bacteria in the water but that is actually a bad idea for waterbeds. Bleach will damage the liner, so it is best to just stick with these two ingredients.
Having this style of bed can be great, but it will become a big hassle if it is not properly maintained. Allowing fungus and algae to build up inside the mattress will cause bubbles that make it uncomfortable to sleep and an odor that will make it unbearable just to be in the bedroom. In addition, they can cause damage that will considerably shorten the life of the waterbed. Take care of your bed by using waterbed conditioner at least once a year.
