Miniature Schnauzer puppies are part of the terrier group and typically live to about 15 years old. They are the smallest compared to the giant and standard breed sizes. First used in Germany as farm dogs, they are a loyal and caring breed.
To create the breed we know today, German farmers cross bred the standard with an Affinpinscher. The result was a sturdy breed that can keep small pests off a farm. This natural instinct helped preserve the breed, however, they are now kept as pets rather than working dogs. Their working instinct tends to remain strong in the bred and can still be used as trackers and hunting companions.
They have a soft undercoat with a top wire layer. Coat colors can vary but the black, white, black and silver, and salt and pepper are the standard. They are hardy with an angular block body and head. When left natural, their ears are propped at the top of their head erect and fold down half way. Their tails are long and in some areas are cropped to a stump along with their ears to give them a pointed look.
A healthy puppy is energetic and loving. They known for being intelligent and playful. As a puppy it is outgoing and typically make good family pets. The breed is known for making strong connections with their owners. If bred well, they should never be overly aggressive or timid.
While they are young, it is important to start socializing early, especially if the pet will be around other small animals. Training should also begin early since this breed can be willful. Grooming should become an important part of routine because they will require more intensive grooming as they grow older, especially around the face and leg area.
The average litter size for miniature schnauzer puppies is three to six. They are mainly bred for companionship because they love to please their people. They are robust and lively even well into old age. Their personality and size allow them to be adaptable to living in either a big city or out in the countryside.
