Eating paper is one of the less acceptable habits of our canine friends. Why do dogs love eating paper? Dogs are known for their great appetites as well as for their very sensitive scenting abilities. It would be understandable if the paper eaten has traces of food on it.
The attention grabbing smell of hamburger wrappers and pizza boxes will never be ignored by the dog. But a toilet paper – .a newspaper or a book? OMG! Dogs really do have the propensity to develop weird behaviors. It seems that dogs find the sounds of tearing paper very interesting. Dogs are well loved pets but an owner will certainly be irritated if the dog has decided to have for breakfast the important documents.
What will happen to a dog that is left alone at home all day? With no toys and no one to play with, the bored dog would find anything to pass the time. A bored dog will look for anything to play with to pass the time and it would not be unusual for a dog to view a newspaper, the telephone book, the toilet paper as interesting toys. Chewing is a natural behavior of dogs and the texture of the paper – not too hard and not too soft, as well as the exciting tearing sound would certainly be very exciting for a bored dog. Puppies have the inclination to chew and papers are one of the things that end up in the dog’s mouths. Eating paper and other things will be noticed in teething puppies as chewing is believed to soothe sore gums.
Although uncommon, the paper eating habit of the dog can be associated with a medical problem. The habit of eating papers is usually associated to the behavioral problems of the dog. The pet’s tendency to eat papers may not be an outcome of a behavioral concern as it can be a symptom of anemia or a gastrointestinal disease. A dog may eat papers in an effort to deal with the malabsorptive and maldigestive disorders.
This habit can endanger the life of the pet. Hopefully the papers that have entered through the dog’s mouth would have exited through the other end. If this does not happen, the dog will be in for some serious medical concern and the pet owner would also have to face hefty medical bills if the dog has to have surgery.
